This year it will become a legal requirement for nurses and midwives to hold an indemnity arrangement in order to be registered with the NMC. The EU legislation took affect from the 25th October 2013, and is in the process of being adopted by the UK government. At the moment it is subject to debate in both the House of Commons, House of Lords, Scottish Parliamentary procedures and approval by the Privy Council.

This matter was consulted by the UK government in 2013 as it became a requirement in the EU to make professional indemnity insurance mandatory for all healthcare professionals. The Council for the NMC has agreed to the change in code, once the UK legislation comes in affect.
